Now that autumn is here, wet weather is more likely to affect your Colorado drive. Wet pavement can greatly increase the chances of traffic incidents, hydroplaning, and slick conditions.  Having tires with adequate tread is of significant importance year round, but can be even more essential while dealing with wet roads.  Here are a few other tips to make your drive safer during rainy weather.

Six Tips for Rainy Day Driving

Safety Starts Before You Drive – Swapping out old windshield wipers for new and ensuring all exterior lighting works are great first steps.  Your tires should also be properly inflated for ultimate traction in any road condition.

Avoid Cruise Control – Cruise control is perfect for dry conditions, but it does not give you the control you need in a slippery situation.  Plus, if you’re not using cruise control you will likely pay more attention to the road.

Leave Some Space – Be sure to keep a safe distance between yourself and the vehicle in front of you.  If that vehicle suddenly brakes, it will give you plenty of time to adjust your speed and avoid a collision.

Slow Down! – In general, during rainy weather, it is the best time to practice slow and defensive driving.  Tires can lose traction easily during rain so reducing your speed maximizes your safety.

Don’t Hard Brake – Along the lines of poor traction during rainy weather, finding yourself braking hard can be detrimental.  Pair this with gentle steering and you’ll be a safer driver.

Turn On Your Defrosters – Window fogging can impair your vision while driving, so it’s important to combat that with your window defrosters.  Turn on both the front and rear defrosters for optimal visibility.
